Our plans for Hemel Hempstead Hospital
We are committed to maintaining services in Hemel Hempstead to ensure there are a range of urgent care and outpatient service available.
In 2023, a potential option to create a new health and care facility in Market Square emerged. This proposal is a partnership across the NHS and council services. A feasibility study is being taken forward by Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board and Dacorum Borough Council.
Dacorum Borough Council published news about the Market Square option in November 2023, with Council Leader Cllr Ron Tindall saying:
"This is very early days, and a full study will be commissioned to develop detailed proposals for this potential campus. The evidence gathered so far suggests that the Market Square site has several advantages. It is in an accessible location, in the heart of the town centre and the Council owns the land. Additionally, it provides a focal point as part of our wider ambitions for the transformation of the town centre. We believe that this would be an exciting and highly beneficial development for the town and wider borough."
West Herts hospital is keen to explore the option and we presented a summary paper to our Board in December 2023 (agenda item 26) which gave some initial information on the proposal. View the summary paper.
This project is at a very early stage and more information will be available as it progresses.
Services at Hemel Hempstead Hospital will continue to run as normal whilst the potential Market Square option is explored.
