Warning alert

It's really important you let us know if you are unable to make it to a scheduled appointment so we can offer the time to someone else who's waiting.

How outpatient appointments work

When an outpatient appointment is required, a medical professional will pass your details on to a specific hospital service and request they schedule an appointment for you. We call this a referral.

When our services receive a referral, they review the information to make sure it has been sent to the correct department, identify if any further information is required or any tests are needed before the appointment, or if it would be more suitable for you to be seen by a GP or at another healthcare facility.

The time it takes for this process to happen can vary, depending on how busy the service is. You can check how long hospital waiting times are by using the NHS My Planned Care website.

If you were referred by a GP, you can check on the current status of your referral using the NHS Referral Portal NHS Referral Portal.

If you were referred by another medical professional, you can check on the current status of your referral by contacting either the Outpatient appointments team, or the hospital department you were referred to.
