Why do I need a colposcopy?
You may be referred to the colposcopy clinic because your cervical screening test (smear test) has shown evidence of abnormal cells or highlighted high risk human papillomavirus (HPV) cells.
Others are seen in clinic because their GP has some uncertainty about the appearance of the cervix, vulva or if bleeding occurs after sexual intercourse.
If your GP is unable to take a smear test, they may also refer you to the colposcopy clinic.
What happens during a colposcopy?
A specialist doctor or specialist nurse carries out the colposcopy. Following assessment, you will be advised what action is necessary. This could be a simple reassurance, a biopsy or a treatment.
Biopsy
A biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is taken from your cervix for closer examination in a laboratory. The biopsy procedure may be slightly uncomfortable for some women, you might feel a slight pinch or stinging sensation, but others say they do not feel it at all.
Treatment
The main treatment performed in the colposcopy clinic is called Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone (LLETZ).
This treatment is very quick and is performed under local anaesthetic within the clinic. This is either done at your first visit or after an initial biopsy.
Other treatments can be performed for other problems affecting the cervix, such as diathermy heat treatment, which is also done under local anaesthetic within the clinic.
Results
The colposcopy findings, biopsy results or smear test results will be sent to you and your GP within six weeks of your appointment.
