Biography

I qualified from the University of Sheffield Medical School in 1996 with an Honours degree (First class) in Medicine after completing a three year BSc Hons degree in Pharmacology at Manchester University. In 2005 I was awarded a Masters (in Respiratory Medicine) from Imperial College London and in 2007 received the honour of becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

I was originally jointly appointed to West Herts and The Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust in 2005. I resigned my RBH&H post in 2012, choosing to commit all my time to West Herts. I have been a full time consultant throughout my entire career.

I specialise in endoscopic ultrasound biopsy (EBUS, EUS). I set up the first EBUS service in the Mount Vernon Cancer Network in 2008 (based at Harefield Hospital), but moved my entire interventional service to West Herts in 2012 were we set up a new EBUS service supported by ROSE (Rapid On-Site Evaluation). The original service was one of the first in the UK. I have been faculty on the UCLH national course- EBUS LIVE since 2017 and co-direct WHTH's own national EBUS LIVE course. I have produced a suite of training videos for EBUS which are found on the WHTH YouTube channel and run the EBUS/Interventional fellowship with my colleague Dr Mogal. I have published widely and presented EBUS data at numerous international conferences including the BTS and ERS. I am undergoing further qualifications and current hold the level 1 ERS Thoracic Ultrasound certificate. This will facilitate the development of WHTH as a thoracic ultrasound training centre in the future.

I run clinics in pleural disease, lung cancer and general respiratory medicine. I support the CPEX service which I helped set up pre-COVID. I chair the lung cancer MDT and co-chair the pleural MDT. I continue my commitment to WHTH and remain on the general medicine on call rota as well as on-call duties with the NIV service.

I was Divisional Director for 7 years (standing down in April 2024) and ran the Medicine division's response to the COVID pandemic. I developed the idea of COVID virtual wards and with a colleague designed and set up the WHTH COVID Virtual hospital, the first of its type in the UK. I continue my interest in virtual medicine as Chief Medical Officer of Virtue Health Group Ltd, an independent organisation which runs the UK's first private Virtual Hospital.

I have a private practice based at Spire Bushey.
